Guest Judge – Graeme Drendel (Archibald finalist)

The Furneaux Festival is excited to announce that the acclaimed Victorian artist Graeme Drendel will be joining us as the judge for this year’s prestigious Islander Portrait Prize. Drendel, known for his evocative figurative works that explore themes of solitude and introspection, brings a wealth of experience and a keen artistic eye to the festival.

Graeme Drendel’s artistic journey is distinguished by a deep exploration of the isolated individual against the backdrop of the stark Australian landscape. His subjects, often portrayed in solitude or in groups, are depicted in a way that suggests a larger, obscured narrative, inviting viewers to immerse themselves in the art of storytelling through visual interpretation. Since his first solo exhibition in 1990, Drendel has become a prominent figure in the Australian art scene. His work has been showcased in thirty solo exhibitions across major cities, including Melbourne, Sydney, Brisbane, and Canberra, gaining critical acclaim and a loyal following. Drendel’s art, represented in numerous public and private collections throughout Australia, captures the essence of Australian culture and identity.

His ability to convey powerful emotions through figures and settings has made his work a subject of study and admiration. As the judge for the Islander Portrait Prize, Graeme Drendel will bring his expertise and unique perspective to the festival. His role will involve evaluating the works of talented artists who have captured the essence of the island and its inhabitants. The prize is a celebration of portraiture and an opportunity for artists to showcase their skills in capturing character, emotion, and narrative. The Furneaux Festival is proud to have an artist of Graeme Drendel’s calibre involved in this event. His participation is not only a testament to the festival’s growing stature but also an inspiration to aspiring artists participating in the competition.
